# Adding a charger

Add a charger, pick its type, fill in its brand, model and serial ID, point the charger to the platform's OCPP address and check that it connects.

You add a charger to your account, then point the charger itself to the platform. Once it connects, you can watch, control and update it remotely.

## At a glance

* **Add charger**: at the top of a <Glossary>location</Glossary>'s **Chargers** tab, and on **Charge points → Commercial chargers**.
* The chargers already at the site, with their status and plugs.

* **Commercial**, **Home**, **Hybrid** and **Private**: the four charger types. The line under them says what the picked type is for.
* **Location**, **Brand** and **Model**: where the charger stands and what it is.
* **Charge box alias** and **Price profile**: what you call it and what charging on it costs.

## Pick the charger type

The type decides who charges on the charger and who pays. You pick it when you add the charger, and it cannot be changed later.

| Type | What it is for |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Commercial** | A <Glossary>commercial charger</Glossary>: a public charger at one of your locations, where every driver pays your price. |
| **Home**       | A <Glossary>home charger</Glossary> at a person's home, not tied to a location.                                                     |
| **Hybrid** | A <Glossary>hybrid charger</Glossary>: a home charger at one of your locations that other drivers can also use and pay for. |
| **Private** | A <Glossary>private charger</Glossary> in a shared building, where each plug belongs to a resident who pays for their own charging. |

If you open **Add charger** from a location's **Chargers** tab, then **Home** is not offered, because a home charger is not tied to a location. The charger types are compared in [Charge points](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/charge-points).

## Step 1: Add the charger to your account

These steps add a commercial charger. If you pick another type, then the form also asks for the owner, as [Home chargers](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/home-chargers), [Hybrid chargers](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/hybrid-chargers) and [Private chargers](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/private-chargers) explain.

1. Open **Charge points → Commercial chargers**, or open a location and go to its **Chargers** tab.
2. Click **Add charger**.
3. Pick **Commercial**.
4. If you started from **Commercial chargers**, then pick the **Location** of the charger.
5. Pick the **Brand** and **Model** of your charger.
6. Enter a **Charge box alias** that tells you which charger it is on site.
7. Pick the **Price profile**, or keep the location's <Glossary>price profile</Glossary> when the form fills it in.
8. Enter the **Serial ID** exactly as the charger reports it.
9. Click **Save**.

If your brand or model is not in the list, then contact support and it will be added, see [Supported EV Chargers](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/supported-ev-chargers).

| Field                             | What it does                                                                                                                         |
| --------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Serial ID** | The ID the platform knows the charger by when it connects. If it differs from the charger's own ID, then the charger cannot connect. |
| **State** | **Open** lets drivers charge once the charger connects. **Closed** keeps it out of use. |
| **Rename plugs** | Gives each plug a name of your own, shown in the app. |
| **Assign pre-generated QR codes** | Links QR codes you received in advance to the charger's plugs. |

Each plug gets its own <Glossary>Plug ID</Glossary> and QR code. Download the QR codes from the charger's menu with **Download QR Code**.

## Step 2: Point the charger to the platform

1. Open the charger maker's configuration tool: an app, a web page or a local network page, depending on the brand.
2. Find the setting for the <Glossary>OCPP</Glossary> server address, sometimes called central system URL or CSMS URL.
3. Enter the platform's address.
4. Save the charger's settings.

Use the secure address whenever the charger supports it:

```
wss://cosmos.eosvolt.com/
```

If the charger does not support secure connections, or it sits on a closed internal network, then use:

```
ws://cosmos.eosvolt.com/
```

## Step 3: Check that it connects

A new charger shows **Registering** until it connects for the first time. Once it connects, its status turns **Open** and its plugs show their state.

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/d759eda14c7c35cd6cabc20cc136246e4bc51fbc49039836c6e7859b61d10f33-adding-chargers-connected.png" width="776px" border={true} framed={true} />

If the registration takes longer than usual, then the platform says so after you save. It usually takes seconds, and sometimes a few hours.

You can also start a test session on the charger with the app.

## If the charger does not connect

* Check that the **Serial ID** in your account matches the charger's own ID.
* Check the server address on the charger, and try the other address if one fails.
* Check that the charger has power and internet.

If it still does not connect, then contact support through your account manager or at <contact@eosvolt.com>. Have the charger's brand, model and serial ID ready.

## What a connected charger gives you

* Live status of the charger and each plug.
* Remote start, stop and reboot, and the [OCPP toolkit](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/ocpp-toolkit).
* Remote <Glossary>firmware</Glossary> updates, see [Firmware management](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/firmware-management).
* Every session in [Sessions](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/sessions) and on the [Dashboard](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/dashboard).

## Common questions

**My charger shows Registering. What does that mean?** The charger is in your account but has not connected yet. Check the server address and the **Serial ID**, and that the charger has internet.

**Where do I find the QR codes for the plugs?** In the charger's menu under **Download QR Code**. Each plug has its own code that drivers scan to start charging.

**Can I move a charger to another location later?** Yes. Click **Edit** in the charger's menu to change its location, alias or model. Its type stays the same.

**How am I billed for chargers?** Per <Glossary>connector</Glossary>: each plug of a charger counts on its own.

**My brand is not in the list. What do I do?** Contact support with the brand and model, and it will be added. The current list is in [Supported EV Chargers](https://docs.eosvolt.com/docs/supported-ev-chargers).
