Private chargers

A private charger is designed for personal use where the owner pays for their charging sessions. It includes home charging features such as scheduling and sharing, making it ideal for condominiums and shared residential properties: the charger sits in a shared parking facility, but it belongs to a household rather than to the public.

How private chargers differ

Location-bound: unlike a home charger, a private charger belongs to a location. That is what enables load balancing across a shared garage and paid charging.
The owner pays: the Enable paid charging setting exists only for private chargers and drives their billing.
Price profile support: private chargers can use a Price profile for their pricing setup.
One owner or one per plug: a private charger can belong to a single household, or each of its plugs can belong to a different one.
Not public: private chargers never appear in the public app; only the owner and the people they share with can use them.

Choosing an ownership model

This is the first decision when you add a private charger, because it also decides how the owner pays.

Owners per plug are available only when the Plug owner subscription module is enabled for your operator. Without it, every private charger has a single owner and stays on pay as you go.

Adding a private charger

Go to Charge Points → Private chargers and click Add new private charger.
Fill out the charger details and select the location (for example the condominium's garage), the brand and the charger model.
Assign a Price profile for the charger's pricing setup.
Under Owner settings, choose Charger owner or Plug owner, then invite the owner (or each plug's owner) via email or leave them to be added offline with a redemption code. See the Home chargers guide for the redemption flow.

Sharing a private charger

The owner can share the charger with other people from the app, and you can manage the same list from Spark with Manage shared users in the charger's row menu. On a charger with an owner per plug, sharing is scoped to the plug: each owner shares their own plug and nobody else's. See Sharing a charger.

If both are set, the charger's own Price profile is used.

Enable paid charging with a price profile is what gives a session a price at all. A plug owner on monthly billing whose charger has no tariff receives a bill containing only their subscription fee, because there is nothing to price the charging with.

Load balancing in shared garages

Because private chargers belong to a location, they participate in the location's load balancing zones like any other charger, which is usually essential in a condominium garage with limited grid capacity. See the Load Balancing guide.

Common questions

Who can charge on a private charger? The owner and the people they share it with. It is never available to the public. On a charger with an owner per plug, each owner and their shared users are limited to their own plug.

Who pays for the electricity? The owner. With one owner for the charger they pay per session; with an owner per plug they are billed once a month.

Can a private charger use a price profile? Yes. A Price profile can be assigned to the charger.

Why does a private charger need a location? The location is what enables load balancing in shared garages and paid charging.

When do I choose Private over Home? When the charger sits in a shared property (condominium, housing association) where sessions must be billed to the owner and the site needs load balancing across many residents' chargers.

Can two residents share one private charger? Yes, if it has two plugs. Set it up with an owner per plug and each resident gets their own access, their own schedules and their own bill. See Plug owners.
