Load balancing

Watch how your sites use the power they have: the charging power now, the zones at their limit, zone errors to mark as handled, and each zone's line loading.

Load balancing under Energy shows, live, how your network uses the power each site may draw. Use it to see which zones are busy, which are at their limit, and what needs your attention.

At a glance

  • Load balancing and Batteries: the tabs of Energy management. Batteries holds the battery pages.
  • Charging power now: the power all your chargers draw right now, with the active sessions and zones under it.
  • Zones at limit: how many zones are sharing out charging power because they are at their limit. This is normal.
  • Zone errors: errors reported by your zones in the last 24 hours.
  • Zones: every Load balancing zone, grouped under its location, with a count of zones per state above the list.
  • State: the zone's state, see the table below.
  • Load: the zone's draw against its own limit, in kW or in amperes per line.
  • Headroom: what the zone can still hand out.
  • Connectors: the connectors in use against all connectors in the zone.
  • By location and By utilization: group the zones by site, or sort them by load with the busiest first.

Check what needs attention

Needs attention sits between the tiles and the zone list. It lists the problems of the last 24 hours, such as No heartbeat received or a Grid program compliance error.

  1. Click a row to open the zone it belongs to.
  2. Deal with the cause, for example a charger that lost its connection.
  3. Click Mark as handled on the row.

The row leaves the list. When nothing is outstanding, the list reads All quiet. No zone errors in the last 24 hours.

If your admin account may manage load balancing, then Mark as handled is shown on each row.

Look into one site

Click a location name in the zone list. The site view shows Zones at this location with the same readings. A summary line gives the site's draw and the connectors in use.

Location events lists the site's events of the last 24 hours. Open location and Zone settings take you to the location's own page, where the zones are set up.

Look into one zone

Click a zone. The zone view shows its full picture:

  • Effective limit: what the zone may hand out, with the Grid capacity buffer taken off. On an ampere zone, this is per line.
  • Load and Zone load: how much of that limit is in use.
  • Assigned power: the total power assigned to the chargers in the zone right now.
  • Imbalance: how unevenly the three lines are loaded, on ampere zones.
  • Power sharing: Dynamic or sequential sharing, and the minimum each session gets when power is available.
  • Chargers in this zone: each charger's status, power, Current (est.) and Assigned / charger max. On ampere zones, Share of charger max and Charger max follow.
  • Zone events: the zone's events of the last 24 hours, such as Zone reached its limit.

Line loading shows the estimated load on L1, L2 and L3, and what is free on each line. Select a line to highlight the chargers drawing from it. The figures come from each charger's Phase wiring and its draw, so they are an estimate, not a meter reading.

In the charger list, waiting for power means a car waits for its turn. The Sessions waiting for power card above the list counts them.

A charger marked at minimum gets only the minimum shown under Power sharing, until the zone has power to spare. A charger without phase wiring reads phases not set on this charger · left out of the line view.

Zone states

StateWhat it means for you
HealthyCharging runs and the zone is well inside its limit.
IdleNothing is charging in the zone.
Near limitThe zone is close to its limit, so the next car may be held back.
At limitThe zone shares out its charging power, so chargers get less than they could take. The time under the chip shows when it started.
Balancing offThe zone is switched off, so its draw is shown but not controlled.

Where zones are set up

Nothing on this tab changes a setting. You set up zones, their chargers, limits and schedules on the location's Load balancing tab, see Load balancing.

If your account has no zones yet, then the tab shows a sample of the page with Make the most of your available power. Set up your first zone takes you to your locations. The sample is marked Sample data and nothing in it comes from your network.

If your account oversees more than one operator, then a CPO filter above the page narrows it to one of them.

The live figures refresh every 10 seconds while the tab is open.

Common questions

A zone says At limit. Is something broken? No. Demand at that site is above what the zone may hand out, so sessions get less power for a while. Look closer only when it happens far more often than you expect.

Why do the line figures say estimated? They come from each charger's phase wiring and what it draws, not from a meter on each line. They show which line is the busiest, but they are not a billing figure.

Why is a charger missing from the line loading? Its power configuration has no phase wiring, so the zone view shows phases not set on this charger. If it is an AC charger in an Ampere zone, then set the phase wiring in the charger's form. A DC charger in a kW zone needs none, because a kW zone limits the total power, not each line.

How do I change a zone's limit from here? You cannot, because this tab only monitors. Click Zone settings to open the location's Load balancing tab and change the limit there.

Why can I see the page but not mark an event as handled? Marking an event as handled needs permission to manage load balancing. Ask an admin of your account to switch on Full access to Load balancing for you.
